You may ask, "But what kind of a race is this? Is he following also these?" Actually, I was also wondering tihs until yesterday, this is a race I didn't absolutely know to exist until about a couple of days ago. But I did not go to see it, it came to me: it was in the parking place under my home. It was supposed to start at 9.30, but the speaker wakes me up early at 8.30 with preparations.

The race is to complete, obviously in Vespa, a spiral track of about 400 meters, alternating with a slalom trait between the bowls and the passage of a seesaw. The result is given by the time, plus 2 seconds of penalty for each pin struck down or foot on the ground. There are two runs.

There are 4 categories: up to 50cc, over 50cc, PX (Wide Vespe) and under 18. I wonder how much advantage you have in having a more powerful Vespa, as the course does not allow you to accelerate much: at the end the best time of the upper category will be 1'00 ", that of the lower category 1'06", which would hve been third in the other category. Times of the big Vespe were instead higher, as their task was the most difficult. I would have already had trouble understanding which way to go, let alone not striking down the pins! And I mean also on foot or on a bicycle , since I've never driven a scooter in my life (my parents were scared, and for me a bicycle was enough to go around in Monza).

In the under 18 category there were also boys and girls much younger than 18: there was also a girl of 10. While seniors were all men, in the under 18 category there were perhaps more girls than boys . In all categories, however, there were no pre-selections: if I understood well, to take part, you oly needed to be a members of a Vespa club. The gap between the first and the last was enormous: there were amateurs, even of very advanced age, struggling to complete the course, not always succeeding.

This is what I understood watching part of the races: the event lasted 4 hours (against the expected 3) and I would not have seen it all, also because there was the Berlin Marathon. In any case, it was fun to observe from very close a tribe so far away from me,  like the bikers.

Vi chiederete "Ma che gara è? Segue anche queste adesso?" Effettivamente me lo chiedevo anch'io fino a ieri, si tratta di una gara di cui ignoravo del tutto l'esistenza fino a un paio di giorni fa. Ma non sono andato a vederla, è venuta lei da me: si è svolta nel parcheggio sotto casa mia. Doveva cominciare alle 9,30, ma l'altoparlante mi sveglia già alle 8,30 con i preparativi.

La gara consiste nel completare, ovviamente in Vespa,  un percorso a chiocciola di circa 400 metri, inframezzato da un tratto di slalom tra i birilli e dal passaggio di un'altalena. Il risultato è dato dal tempo, a cui si aggiungono 2 secondi di penalità per ogni birillo abbattuto o piede messo a terra. Ci sono due manche. 

Vi sono 4 categorie: fino a 50cc, oltre 50cc, PX (Vespe larghe) e under 18. Mi chiedo quanto vantaggio ci sia nell'avere una Vespa più potente, visto che il percorso non consente di accelerare molto: alla fine il miglior tempo della categoria superiore sarà 1'00", quello della categoria inferiore 1'06", che sarebbe stato il terzo nell'altra categoria. Più alti invece i tempi delle Vespe larghe, il cui compito era il più difficile. Io avrei avuto già problemi a capire in che direzione fare il percorso, figuriamoci non abbattere i birilli! E dico anche a piedi o in bici, visto che non ho mai guidato uno scooter in vita mia (i miei si spaventavano, e a me per girare a Monza bastava la bici).

Nella categoria under 18 c'erano ragazzi anche molto sotto i 18: c'era anche una ragazza di 10. Mentre tra i seniores erano tutti uomini, tra gli under 18 c'erano forse più ragazze che ragazzi. In tutte le categorie, comunque, non c'erano preselezioni: se ho ben capito, per partecipare bastava essere membri di un Vespa club. Il divario tra primi e ultimi era quindi enorme: si vedevano degli amatori, anche di età molto avanzata, che faticavano a completare il percorso, non sempre riuscendoci.

Questo è quello che ho capito guardando qualche spezzone delle gare: la manifestazione è durata sulle 4 ore (contro le 3 previste) e non ce l'avrei fatta a vederla tutta, anche perché c'era la Maratona di Berlino. E' stato comunque divertente osservare da vicino una tribù molto lontana da me come quella dei bikers.

The races started at 5 p.m., but for work problems I can only arrive at 5.35. I think I will find the square full and find it hard to see something, but I got used too well in London: I actually find no more than 3-4 rows and for the place I have a choice embarassment. Fidal, the Italian athletics federation will speak of "thousands of spectators," but for me, they may be little more than 1000.

I arrive during the pole vault: I see the German clear his height , Menaldo of France misses. When they show the rankings, I find that Stecchi had cleared his, which will remain the only one of the day, and arrives second in the round (every round counts as a separate race). I thought they would do one race at a time, instead they play one round for each of the three races and then start over again. The jumps I saw were the last in the first round: they start with 30 meters again, the track is attached to Pincio (in the middle there is the long jump platform, towards the center of the square the PV.) I move closer to the start : from there I can see the first 20 meters, not so much the finish. In a stadium it would be an enviable situation, but in the square and with so few people I hope for more: I try to climb Pincio, thinking that from there I could see well. On the stairway, where there are a few people, I find that long jump can be seen well, at least run and take-off, while you cannot understand the result well. After LJ ends, I try from the first terrace, but if there was nobody, it was for a reason: the sight is obstructed by the tents. So I go down again for PV, which is the race that you see best: jumps seen from below, especially from below the uprights, are very impressive.

In the third round the Spaniard jumps diagonally and ends out of the mattress. It's frightening to think what would happen if he had fallen down from the platform (which is about one meter above ground): he gets a little hurt in his ankle, but it should not be anything serious, though of course he will not jump again. Meanwhile Stecchi cannot make a good jump anymore, he gives the impression of not being able to load the pole. For other races I try different positions, but none offers a perfect vision.

In the end it was a fun race: it would have been more with a more uncertain outcome, instead Germany dominated, but Italy came second, thanks mainly to Strati, who came second in all rounds. Of course, the 30 meters is a very odd race: you don't have the time to reach the maximum speed that it's already finished. Sorry  for not finding a perfect view: probably the only point from which everyone could see everything was the bench on which Fidal president Giomi was sitting with other VIPs, obviously not open to the public. There may have been a good view on the main terrace of Pincio, which was full, but I did not go upstairs so much. For the live audience it would probably be better with rwversed platforms, i.e. with PV on the Pincio side, but as Gazzetta dello Sport said, these races are built for TV. Not for "spettatore comune" (common spectator)...

Le gare cominciavano alle 17, ma per problemi di lavoro riesco ad arrivare solo alle 17,35. Penso di trovare la piazza piena e di fare fatica a vedere qualcosa, ma mi ero abituato troppo bene a Londra: in realtà trovo non più di 3-4 file e per il posto c'è l'imbarazzo della scelta. La Fidal parlerà di "migliaia di spettatori", ma per me saranno stati al massimo poco più di 1000.

Arrivo che è in corso il salto con l'asta: vedo il tedesco superare la sua quota, il francese Menaldo fallirla. Quando danno la classifica, scopro che Stecchi aveva superato la sua, che resterà l'unica della giornata, ed arriva secondo nel turno (ogni turno conta come una gara a sé). Credevo che facessero una gara alla volta, invece fanno un turno per ciascuna delle tre gare e poi ricominciano. I salti che avevo visto erano gli ultimi del primo turno: si riprende dai 30 metri, la cui pista è attaccata al Pincio (in mezzo c'è la pedana del lungo, verso il centro della piazza l'asta. Mi sposto verso la partenza: da lì vedo bene i primi 20 metri, non tanto l'arrivo. In uno stadio sarebbe una situazione invidiabile, ma in piazza e con così poca gente spero di più: provo quindi a salire sul Pincio, pensando che da lì si veda bene tutto. Sulla scalinata, dove c'è un po' di gente, scopro che il lungo si vede bene, almeno rincorsa e stacco, mentre non si capisce bene la misura. Finito il lungo provo dalla prima terrazza, ma se non c'era nessuno, c'era un motivo: la vista è ostruita dai tendoni. Torno quindi giù per l'asta, che è la gara che si vede meglio: i salti visti dal basso, specie da sotto i ritti, sono molto impressionanti.

Nel terzo turno lo spagnolo salta in diagonale e finisce fuori dal materasso. Vengono i brividi a pensare cosa sarebbe successo se fosse caduto giù dalla pedana (che è sopraelevata di cieca un metro): si fa un po' male alla caviglia, ma non dovrebbe essere niente di grave, anche se naturalmente non riprende. Intanto Stecchi non azzecca più un salto, dà l'impressione di non riuscire a caricare l'asta. Per le altre gare provo diverse posizioni, ma nessuna offre una visione perfetta.

Alla fine è stata una gara divertente: lo sarebbe stata di più con un risultato più in bilico, invece la Germania domina, ma l'Italia arriva seconda, grazie soprattutto alla Strati, che arriva seconda in tutti i turni. Certo, i 30 metri sono una gara molto strana: non si fa in tempo a raggiungere la velocità massima che si è già arrivati. Peccato per la visuale non perfetta: probabilmente l'unico punto da cui si vedeva bene tutto era la panca su cui sedeva il presidente Giomi con altri VIP, ovviamente non aperta al pubblico. Si sarà visto bene anche alla terrazza principale del Pincio, che era piena, ma non mi andava di salire così in alto. Per il pubblico dal vivo sarebbe stato probabilmente meglio con le pedane invertite, ossia con l'asta verso il Pincio, ma come diceva anche la Gazzetta, queste gare sono costruite per la TV. Non per lo spettatore comune...
