The Milan Derby (1979-1999)

Inter beats Milan in the 167th league derby. Also this time, as it has been for so long, too long, I've watched it on TV. I have watched a few derbies liv, I would say a number between 15 and 20.

The first I remember, although I'm not 100% sure that I was the first one, was the one out of the 1979-80 season, which ended with Inter's title. My first match at S. Siro was in May 1974 (Inter-Cesena 3-1), but in the first years my father did not take me to blockbuster matches, he was scared. That year, however, we went to see all the matches, although we still did not have a season ticket, which we started buying next year. I entered illegaly, with a ticket to another seat, appealing to staff (who were not yet called steward, those were only on the airplanes) mercy. I saw the game pressed against a stairway at the entrance of what is now the first orange deck (then there were places, called parterre, between the grandstand and the sideline). Inter won 2-0, with a double by Beccalossi.

Since the year after I had my seat, as a season ticket holder, and in the first deck at that time the only numbered. Of course I do not remember all the derbys I saw, I have some unordered memories:

- the Italy Cup derby, at night (it did not happen in the league) with Milan in Serie B, it seems to me that we won 1-0;

- the "Minaudo derby" in the 80s, won 1-0 with a goal in the final minutes by a player who had just been promoted from the Youth team, precisely, Minaudo;

- another derby of the 80s, finished 2-2 (then it was less common than now ...). The peculiarity was that the week after there was the Rhinos-Seamen  American football derby, and it also ended 2-2;

- the derby between Orrico's Inter and Sacchi's Milan: the first half offered a very bad prospect for the future of football: there was virtually no play, the teams were suffocated by mutual press, they quickly released the ball. And it was supposed  to be a show football... The second half was a bit better

- the second derby of the 1992-93 season. It was the first year in which transfers were allowed during season (in November) between teams in the same series and Inter bought an unknown midfielder from Udinese, such Manicone, who gave a breakthrough to our game, giving hopes to challenge Milan for the League title. In the derby Inter was long in the lead, then in the final minutes Milan equalized with Gullit and thus continued his record undefeated streak. The following year Manicone finished on the bench, then was sold.

Then I moved to Rome, and for me the big matches were no longer those with Milan and Juventus, but those with Rome and Lazio. I remember the sadness in following a TV derby in a desert bar. I came back to see a live one in autumn 1999: it was the derby of Ronaldo's ejecton for a elbow hit to Ayala, with Inter leading1-0: in the end Milan won 2-1.

Icardi was six, Donnarumma a few months: old  it is still my last live derby.

L'Inter batte il Milan nel 167° derby di campionato. Anche stavolta, come ormai da tanto, troppo tempo, l'ho visto in TV. Di derby dal vivo ne ho visti un po', direi un numero tra 15 e 20.

Il primo che ricordo, anche se non sono sicuro al 100% che fosse il primo in assoluto, fu quello d' andata del campionato 1979-80, conclusosi con lo scudetto dell'Inter. La mia prima partita a S. Siro fu nel maggio 1974 (Inter-Cesena 3-1), ma nei primi anni mio padre non mi portava alle partite più di cartello. Quell'anno invece andammo a vedere tutte le partite, anche se non avevamo ancora l'abbonamento, che cominciammo a fare dall'anno dopo. Entrai in mdo illegale, con un biglietto per un altro posto, impietosendo l'addetto agli ingressi (che non si chiamava ancora steward, quelli c'erano solo sugli aerei). Vidi la partita pressato contro una scala, all'ingresso di quello che oggi è il primo anello arancio (allora c'erano dei posti, detti parterre, tra la tribuna e il bordo campo). L'Inter vinse 2-0, con doppietta di Beccalossi.

Dall'anno dopo almeno avevo il mio posto, essendo abbonati, e nel primo anello, all'epoca l'unico numerato. Naturalmente non mi ricordo tutti i derby visti, ho alcuni ricordi sparsi:

• il derby di coppa Italia, in notturna (allora non succedeva in campionato) con il Milan in serie B, mi sembra vinto 1-0;
• il "derby di Minaudo" negli anni '80, vinto 1-0 con un gol nel finale di un giocatore entrato da poco in prima squadra dalla Primavera, per l'appunto, Minaudo;
• un altro derby degli anni '80, finito 2-2 (allora era meno comune di adesso...). La peculiarità fu che la settimana dopo ci fu il derby di football americano Rhinos-Seamen, e anch'esso finì 2-2;
• il derby tra l'Inter di Orrico e il Milan di Sacchi: il primo tempo offrì una prospettiva molto brutta per il futuro del calcio: non ci fu praticamente gioco, le squadre, soffocate dal reciproco pressing, si liberavano in fretta del pallone. E doveva essere il calcio spettacolo... Il secondo tempo fu un po' meglio;
• il derby di ritorno 1992-93. Era il primo campionato in cui erano ammessi trasferimenti a stagione in corso (a novembre) tra squadre della stessa serie vinse il e l'Inter prese uno sconosciuto mediano dell'Udinese, tale Manicone, che diede una svolta al gioco, tanto da dare speranze di contendere lo scudetto al Milan. Nel derby l'Inter fu a lungo in vantaggio, poi verso la fine il Milan pareggiò con Gullit e potette così continuare la sua serie record di imbattibilità. L'anno dopo Manicone finì in panchina, poi fu ceduto.

Poi venne il trasferimento a Roma, e per me le partite clou non furono più quelle con Milan e Juventus, ma quelle con Roma e Lazio. Ricordo la tristezza nel seguire un derby in TV in un bar deserto. Tornai a vederne uno del vivo nell'autunno del 1999: fu il derby dell'espulsione di Ronaldo per una gomitata ad Ayala, con l'Inter sull'1-0: alla fine vinse il Milan 2-1.

Lukaku aveva 6 anni, Laitaro poco più di 2, Donnarumma 10 mesi: è rimasto il mio ultimo derby dal vivo.
