European Athletics Championships in Barcelona (2010)

Clicca qui per la versione italiana

The European Athletics Championships are returning to Rome after 50 years: the 1974 edition is the first I can remember. For me, it will be my seventh live, fifth consecutive one: I have covered Berlin 2018 and Munich 2022, and told my memories of Gothenburg 2006, Zurich 2014 and Amsterdam 2016. Helsinki 2012 is the only edition I skipped: that leaves Barcelona 2010.

I had combined the trip with a family holiday on the Costa Brava: I therefore watched the sessions from Tuesday to Saturday morning, then skipped Saturday afternoon to go to the seaside and returned for the last session on Sunday evening. I had an all-event ticket, in the second deck towards the end of the straight opposite the finish line. The ticket was still on paper, and at some point I had to have it replaced as it was ruined by rain. The stadium was relatively small for an Olympic stadium, you could see well everywhere.

On the first day, I arrived at the stadium when the competitions had started a while ago: I missed the women's 800 heats, with the surprising elimination of Cusma, who had done so well the year before in Berlin (only two rounds were scheduled). Another disappointment Chiara Rosa, who was second to last in the shot put. The first medal came with Meucci, bronze in 10,000. Two Italian athletes from that day will still be competing in Rome in addition to Meucci, there is also Fassinotti.

On the second day there was one of the events I remember best: the men's hammer, with Vizzoni redeeming himself for the bad luck of the year before and towards the beginning, I think at the second throw, he took second place with 79.12, maintaining it until the end. There were also semi-finals and finals of 100, with the victory of the favourite Lemaitre and two Italians in the final, which seemed like a great result at the time.

Of the third day, I remember above all the pole vault qualifications, with Gibilisco being the only one to finish without a fault, at least in his group (Lavillenie also made one), and I was already dreaming of reliving the emotions of Paris. There was also the men's triple jump, with yet another disappointment for Donato, who until the next edition in Helsinki was never competitive in the outdoor championships. There was also Greco, who did not even reach the final (the best Italian was Schembri, eighth).

On Friday there was the final of t400, with Grenot doing an excellent race, going close to her personal best: 50.43, which in the next three editions, two of which were won by Grenot herself, would have been enough for gold. In 2010, however, she finished fourth, behind three Russians. There was also the pole vault final, without Isinbayeva, which was won by Feofanova. Before going to the stadium I had seen the 50 km race walk on TV, which was being held in the city centre: I remember the commentator saying that it was looking bad for Olympic champion Schwazer, who in fact later withdrew. A few days earlier, again on TV, I had seen the South Tyrolean win silver in the 20 km.

On Saturday at the end of the morning session, I stayed for a long time at the stadium, with my family waiting for me to leave for the seaside, to see the finish of the women's marathon, with Incerti third behind a Lithuanian and a Russian. That afternoon, in the session I missed, there was Simona La Mantia's surprising silver in the triple jump and Gibilisco's fourth place in the pole vault. I went back to Barcelona with my son for the last evening. It was supposed to be Howe's night, who was fifth at half race with 8.12, but the podium was only 11 cm away, so I'm sure he'd make his mark in the final: he's done it so many times before... Instead he remains fifth with 8.12. I would never have imagined that in the rest of his career he would never do better, and only once would he go beyond 8 metres. The men's 4X100, on the other hand, was a positive surprise, finishing second to France in 38.17, beating the Italian record that dated back to the 1983 World Championships. The women's 4X400 also defended itself well, with 3:25.71, which, however, was not enough for the podium. There was also the women's high jump, without any Italians, where I hoped to see Hellebaut win again, the champion-secretary, as I called her because of her look, who had become my idol four years earlier: instead she came fifth, Vlasic won.

I spoke of the placings as I saw them, but if one looks at the standings now, one often finds them very different: Incerti won gold (passing through silver), as did Schwazer in the 20 km, while Grenot won bronze in both the individual and relay. There was even a fourth place for Romagnolo in the 5000, in a race that I don't remember at all, whereas if I had seen her finish fourth it would have been a great result: of the four who were later disqualified, I don't remember how many came before her, but I suppose all of them. It is known, unfortunately, that in athletics the standings remain provisional for 10 years.

European Athletics Championships in Zurich (2014)

Clicca qui per la versione italiana

The European Athletics Championships in Munich will start soon  (but first there are the swimming ones in Rome ...). For me it will be the sixth live, fourth consecutive. I have already talked about Gothemburg 2006, Amsterdam 2016 and Berlin 2018, this time it's Zurich 2014's turn.

I have seen four out of six days live (in Munich it will be three and a half out of seven). I had started on Thursday morning, with the women's race walk, in the city center, with the first disappointment: I was hoping for a medal that did not arrive, even though I knew it was not very likely. Then I took the tram to the stadium, which is a couple of kilometers from the center. On the tram a problem was deciphering the announcements, but I discovered that it was also a problem for the Germans: once, after an announcement of which I hadn't understood one word, I heard Germans ask each other "what did he say?" "ah, I have no idea!".

Arriving and seeing the sign "Letzigrund Stadion" gave me an emotion comparable to the one I had experienced a few months earlier entering the Porte des Mosquieters at Roland Garros. The stadium is almost entirely underground, you have to go down to take a seat. Entering, I just had time to see, in the pole vault qualification, Gibilisco's exit: I will always be thankful to him for the emotions of Paris. This was fairly planned, but it was one of the many disappointments: Italian athletics was entering the black period that culminated in London 2017, when we tought each championships had gone badly until we saw the next ones. I kept asking myself "why don't I go to watch fencing?" (where Italians won).

A great protagonist of those Europeans was the mascot: the cow Cooly, who first performed in high jump (fosbury), then in pole vault, beating the "bovine world records". The day ended with the men's 3000st, where the winner, a Frenchman, took off his jersey before the finish and was disqualified. As France had another disqualified (in 110hs) the Neue Zuercher Zeitung spoke of "black day formFrance". I was thinking about how I wanted to have a black day with two golds and a bronze.

The next day, at the end of the morning session, I went to a Caribbean restaurant near the stadium for lunch. Some disreputable-looking people entered, followed by a more reassuring one, who at first seemed like a dad with a baby. When she approached, I discovered that she was a mother instead, but not an ordinary mother: she was Spotakova! I also took a selfie, which was lost (the "disreputable people" were her fan club). The afternoon began with the 50 km race walk, dominated by the French Diniz, then I returned to the stadium, where for us the main race was the women's 400. Grenot started strong, but there was always the fear that she would collapse, like two years before (where she had collapsed in the final straight and finished sixth), but this time she kept to the end and was gold medal.

Saturday morning I remember that I was on the straight opposite the finish line and I could see clearly the second leg of the 4X100, with Schippers. In the end I moved to the lakefront for the last kilometers of the women's marathon: Straneo was leading along with a Frenchwoman and, after the silver at the World Championships the year before, I was convinced that she would win. Instead she was silver again. In the evening I remember Pedroso's fifth place in the 400hs, which years later became a fourth.

Sunday morning was dedicated to the men's marathon. The course consisted of four laps: one of the highest points passed next to the Polytechnic, which was also close to my hotel. Next to it there was also a funicular, which led to another point of the route, on the lakefront. By going up and down, I was able to see 8 passings, up to the last, in which Meucci was leading alone. I tried to reach the finish area, but there was too much crowd (in the second photo, taken from Cooly's FB page, like the other one).

On the last afternoon, there were great expectationns among locals for the women's 4X100: newspapers sang the praises of the new star Kambundji (who, of course, was not what she is now). The expectations  were disappointed: the Swiss quartet lost the baton at the start. There was also a rumor that Kambundji, in the first leg, had forgotten to take it at the start. Instead it seems that she had lost it by hitting her knee with it in starting. With the exclusion of Switzerland and the Netherlands, Italy finished fourth, 4/100 from the bronze: in the end what should have been our weakest relay was the one that finished best- Women's 4X400, the best rated, arrived 7th (but, given the times, it could never have finished better than 5th), men's 4X100 didn't finish the final, men's 4X400 out of the final.

Zurich was followed by Amsterdam, then Berlin. There should have been Paris, but now we are back with Munich.

A Zurigo seguì Amsterdam, poi Berlino.

Olimpiadi di Vancouver (2010) - 1^ parte: viaggio e gare all'aperto

Football matches in Frankfurt (2003-2014)

Clicca qui per la versione italiana The German football league has resumed (rather bad for my Eintracht, even if it is now bouncing back), and since there is only this one, they have all become fans. Having lived in Frankfurt at different times, I saw a few games and became an Eintracht fan, although I could never wear a shirt because of its colours (I have some material, but in other colours).

The first German league match I saw was in the summer of 1992, Karlsruhe-Borussia Moenchengladbach, I think it was the first in the season: it ended 4-2. I remember a stadium surrounded by greenery, a very thorough personal inspection (I had a portable fan that made them very suspicious, but they left it to me) and, on the field, some uncertainty about the backpass rule, which had just entered into force.

The first match in Frankfurt was in 2003: Eintracht-Borussia Dortmund. The stadium was still called "Waldstadion", literally "Woods' Stadium": a couple of years later it would have taken the name of Commerzbank Arena. I arrived with the S-Bahn, the urban railway: leaving the station I thought "the Wald is here, but what about the Stadion?" In fact, the forest is dense and you have to go quite a long way before you see the stadium. You go first through the inspection and then the avenue with the kiosks: in merchandising there is Always something against the rivals of Kickers Offenbach, the neighbouring country, even if for a long time it has never gone beyond third division. I learned later than Eintracht won its only title in 1959, beating Kickers in the final (the single group league was born in 1962).
The match ended 1-0 for Borussia. There were many guest fans: I found out later on transports that not all of them had come from Dortmund and the surrounding area, many were from Frankfurt. I returned to the stadium a few weeks later: the opponent was Stuttgart. It was a team fighting for the title, with many famous players, such as striker Kuranyi, but I especially noticed the left back, an unknown player named Philipp Lahm. Stuttgart was clearly stronger: Eintracht held on a bit, but then lost 2-0. I went back to Italy, but Eintracht continued the season along that line, ending up being relegated.
I returned to Frankfurt for the 2010-11 season, in the stadium refurbished for the 2006 World Cup and with the name of the sponsor. I used to reach him by bus, which he leaves on the opposite side, much closer to the stadium (and in sight). After a series of games in which Eintracht never managed to score (one ended 0-0), towards the end of the season, I finally managed to see him win: 2-1 to Sankt Pauli. I was therefore able to witness the ritual of the announcement after the goal: the speaker says "Eintracht" and the audience says the score, then says the opponent's name and the audience answers "zero", even if it's not true.

I returned to Italy at the end of April, then shortly before the end of the season: from home I saw the loss to Borussia Dortmund which sanctioned the relegation of Eintracht, the fourth, I think, since the start of the single-group championship, but the second out of two seasons I had been in Frankfurt. I was afraid I would be banished forever, if not from the city, at least from the stadium.

Instead I returned in September 2012. I stayed three years, but I managed to see much fewer matches than I would have liked, as tickets were sold out several weeks in advance, often more than a month (even 2 months for key games like the one with Bayern), and it was difficult for me to predict which weekends I would be free: in the 2014-15 season I didn't see one.

I would not be able to name with certainty even one opponent of those games, but I remember that compared to previous years the results were more diverse: there were defeats, but also wins. The first few times I never took a drink, because drinks can be paid only with a prepaid card specific to the stadium, then I decided to buy it (I could see that this is also the case in Gelsenkirchen, but that's another story). Once I got there early, I glanced at the Eintracht museum, but from the outside, because it closes more than one hour before the start of the game: I remember the poster for the 1960 Champions League semi-final against Rangers, which qualified Eintracht for the final, which they lost 7-3 to Real Madrid.

I also went to see a match of the other team from Frankfurt, FSV Frankfurt, at the then Volksbank Stadion. I made the mistake of going by car: there is little parking on the main road and the side street are barred, to prevent them from being invaded. I had to park so far away that I was forced to take the underground (overground there), which arrives near the stadium (I didn't know it). In a full stadium for no more than a quarter, the FSV won 2-0, I don't remember the opponent. At the time they played in second division and at certain moments they seemed to be able to fight for promotion, now they are in fourth series and in the relegation zone.

Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo (2011)

Clicca qui per la versione italiana I'm in Seefeld waiting for the Nordic World Ski Championships to start. The previous edition, held in Lahti, saw my debut as a blogger, with the days of 2nd March , 3rd and 4th. Then, due to other commitments, I was there in the last days (but skipping the last, with the boring 50 km mass start), this time I am here for the first ones, more interesting, especially for Italians. Before Lahti, I had already been to Nordic World Ski Championships three times: Lahti 2001, Val di Fiemme 2003 and Oslo 2011: this time I will tell you about the last one.

It is always nice to see skiing in Oslo, not only because of its tradition, but also because you are in a big city, also a very beautiful one. The stadium is about 8 km from the centre: they encouraged to walk, but for me 8 km in the snow and with -10 degrees were a bit too much and I preferred to take the underground (which is overground outside the centre). I met interesting people, from various fans, also Italians, to one who as a boy had been a ski jumper , also beating a future medal at the Ski-Flying World Championships.

The first day was the most interesting for Italians: it started with the sprint, where the young Pellegrino won the silver. I saw it from a tribune a little out of the stadium, so I could not see the finish very well. We continued with the women's jumping competition, a debut at the World Championships, with the incredible silver of the Italian Runggaldier (if I'm not mistaken, after 6th place in the first run) and another Italian in the top 10 place: Irashko of Austria was so superior that she started one gate lower (and then there was no compensation for wind and gate yet).

The next day I saw the award ceremony in the centre, in the Medal Plaza (they too had adopted the fashion started in Turin) The first 6 took the stage: in the women's jumping 14-year-old Takahashi of Japan, then sixth. was presented first. In the main square (but on the opposite side) there was Casa Italia, which unlike many other times was open to common spectators, even at dinner: I saw Italian female jumpers having dinner with French male ones.

Of the other races I remember especially the Nordic combination, from the normal hill. Unlike the large one, which is right behind the arrival of the cross-country track, the normal hill is far away: to get from there to the cross-country trails it's 850 meters (at least they say, but they seemed more) uphill, even steep . I saw a woman pull a sled with a child, and no one offered to help her, because for a Norwegian it's no big deal. For cross-country, I was in a tribune near the biathlon shooting. Before the start the fog came down, and in the first half of the race I saw the athletes only when they passed right under the grandstand.

I also remember the women's 10 km and the men's 15, with Cologna 's win (I think) in the latter: my last chance, so far, to see an old-style race, with time-trial starts. If I saw those, I suppose I also saw the skiathlon, but my aversion to mass starts is such that I do not remember anything. And on Saturday, I will see another one ...
