NFL Pro Bowl: Day 3 - the game

We arrive at the stadium around 11.25. Parking lots, which cost up to $ 50, are already beginning to fill up. At the entrance I find out that backpacks are not allowed and I have to go back to the bus to leave it. Actually, when we registered, we were given a transparent bag , but I thought it was simply a gift, not that it had to be brought to the stadium.

The party takes place in a gazebo in front of the stadium. At about 12.15 we are warned that the "red carpet" is about to start, even if it's actually blue: we see QB Carr, but most of the players arrive around 1 o'clock. First the mascots show up: those of yesterday, but also some new ones, like the Philadelphia and the Kansas City ones. Cheerleaders come to see us: seen close, they are are normal girls (even a little short ), few would be noticed on the street.

Then come the "NFL legend": RB LaDainan (I hope it's written like that) Tomlinson and a LB whose name I did not understand. Tomlinson, interviewed, gives very diplomatic answers: as a reference person he quotes Jesus and as a favorite teammate he replies "my wife". Meanwhile, while the players are parading, a writing on a plane reminds us to prepare for the arrival of Jesus.

Around 1.45 we move towards the stadium. Pittsburgh remains the most represented team among the jerseys, but there are also some of the local university, Central Florida, and many historical jerseys: Earl Campbell, Payton, Aikman, up to Unitas. It took me a while to reach my place: I understood where it was, but not how to reach it. The stadium has 3 decks (I am at the last), but only the first one is a full one, and also on the ground floor the way was blocked in a point. The "seat" is a simple metal bench, without seats

We get to the start of the game, and the stadium has not filled up: there are still a few empty seats left in all the decks. The players are presented in team order: those who receive most applause are QBs, WRs, RBs, the Pittsburgh players and those of the Florida teams. Most than all probably Antonio Brown and Thielen.

I have time to see the first drive of each team, with TD of the NFC and FG of the AFC, then, towards the end of the first quarter, it starts to rain, and the stands are all uncovered. Someone leaves immediately, I try to resist a bit, but then the rain becomes too strong (I also have a fever). In the third deck there are not even screens (there were instead on the ground floor), so we do not know anything about the game. I can go back to my place in the middle of the second quarter, in time to see the TD on interception that puts NFC on a 17-3 lead.

It looks like a game of flag football: soft tackles, no pressure on kicks, no kick return. Punting is foreseen, but it is never done, so much so that one wonders why they have brought punters. NFC in the lead with 3 minutes remaining will also not punt, and this will probably cost them the game.

At halftime, there is a performance of an artist unknown to me, the same who had sung the national anthem: he made a musical on Broadway and also won "Dancing with the Stars".

In the 4th quarter I am again forced to leave my place for a while. Then I come back, but 2 minutes from the end it starts to rain again strong: I resist until the winning TD of the AFC, then I run away: I get lost just the NFC final fumble. At the end I immediately go to the exit, I do not even know who was named MVP.

A game in conditions a bit disadvantaged, and certainly I expected more from the stadium, but it was worth it. If I ever have to repeat the experience, I would try to buy everything on my own, it should be feasible.

NFL Pro Bowl - 3° giorno: la partita

Arriviamo allo stadio verso le 11,25. I parcheggi, che costano fino a $50, cominciano già a riempirsi. All'ingresso scopro che gli zaini non sono ammessi e mi tocca tornare al pullman per lasciarlo. Effettivamente alla registrazione ci avevano dato in dotazione una borsa trasparente, ma pensavo fosse un semplice omaggio, non che fosse da portare allo stadio.

Il party si svolge in un gazebo davanti lo stadio. Verso le 12,15 ci avvisano che sta per cominciare il "red carpet", che in realtà è blu: si vede il QB Carr, ma la maggior parte dei giocatori arriva intorno alle 13. Prima passano le mascotte: quelle di ieri, ma anche alcune nuove, come quella di Philadelphia e quella di Kansas City. Vengono a trovarci anche delle cheerleaders: viste da vicino sono ragazze normali (anche bassine), poche verrebbero notate per strada.

Arrivano poi le "NFL legend":  il RB LaDainan (spero si scriva così) Tomlinson e un LB di cui non ho capito il nome. Tomlinson, intervistato, dà risposte molto diplomatiche: come figura di riferimento cita Gesù e come compagno di squadra preferito risponde "mia  moglie". Intanto, mentre sfilano i giocatori, una scritta su un aereo ci ricorda di prepararci per l'arrivo di Gesù.

Verso le 13,45 ci avviamo verso lo stadio. Pittsburgh rimane la squadra più rappresentata tra le maglie, ma ve ne sono anche della locale università, Central Florida, e molte maglie storiche: Earl Campbell, Payton, Aikman, fino a Unitas. Ci metto un po' a raggiungere il mio posto: avevo capito dov'era, ma non come raggiungerlo. Lo stadio ha 3 anelli (io sono all'ultimo), ma solo il primo è intero, e anche al piano terra c'era un tratto sbarrato. Il posto è una semplice panca di metallo, senza seggiolini.

Si arriva all'inizio della partita, e lo stadio non si è riempito: rimangono un bel po' di posti vuoti, in tutti gli anelli. I giocatori vengono presentati in ordine di squadra: ricevono più applausi QB, WR, RB, i giocatori di Pittsburgh e quelli delle squadre della Florida. Più di tutti probabilmente Antonio Brown e Thielen.

Faccio in tempo a vedere il primo drive di ciascuna squadra, con TD dell'NFC e FG dell'AFC, poi , verso la fine del primo quarto, si mette a piovere, e le tribune sono tutte scoperte. Qualcuno va via subito, io provo a resistere un po', ma poi la pioggia si fa troppo forte (ho pure la febbre). Al terzo anello non ci sono neanche schermi (c'erano invece a piano terra), per cui non sappiamo nulla della partita. Riesco a tornare verso la metà del secondo quarto, in tempo per vedere il TD su intercetto che porta la NFC sul 17-3.

Sembra quasi una partita di flag football: placcaggi appena accennati, nessuna pressione sui calci, niente kick return. Il punt è previsto, ma non viene mai usato, tanto che ci si chiede cos'abbiano portato a fare i punter. Non punterà nemmeno la NFC in vantaggio a 3 minuti dalla fine, e probabilmente questo gli costerà la partita.

Nell'intervallo si esibisce un artista a me sconosciuto, lo stesso che aveva cantato l'inno nazionale: ha fatto un musical a Broadway ed ha anche vinto "Ballando con le stelle".

Nel 4° quarto sono di nuovo costretto ad abbandonare la postazione per un po'. Poi rientro, ma a 2 minuti dalla fine si mette di nuovo a piovere forte: resisto fino al TD vincente dell'AFC, poi scappo: mi perdo giusto il fumble finale dell'NFC. Allo scadere mi dirigo subito verso l'uscita, non so nemmeno chi sia stato nominato MVP.

Partita in condizioni un po' disagiate, e sicuramente dallo stadio mi aspettavo di più, ma ne è valsa la pena. Se mai dovessi ripetere l'esperienza, proverei ad acquistare tutto in proprio, dovrebbe essere fattibile.

NFL Pro Bowl - Day 2: practices and party

This time the coach to the ESPN center is full. Also there, the crowd is much bigger than yesterday: it is a bit hard to find a place in the stands. You can see many jerseys of Pittsburgh, but also of the Miami WR Landry. Then there are oldtimers' jerseys: the evergreen Montana, but also Jim Kelly and Lawrence Taylor.

This time I follow the AFC. Before the beginning, Von Miller arrives and throws some balls in the audience. The, they start starts: first offense and defense test the plays separately (this time the offense uses only one ball at a time), then they come together. Safety Weddle plays alongside his son, who also tries to participate in a tackle. The training lasts only twenty minutes, then the assault of the fans starts, but at least on my side few players show up, and all defensive ones. I see  Cleveland LB Schobert very closely, and he does not even look old enough to be a pro. An NFC player, LB Chandler Jones, also passes by.

Everything is cleared to make way for flag football: in fact, the finals of a national tournament organized by the NFL take place here. They play first a girls' "exhibition" match, between two teams that could not be more different: one of girls mostly white and athletic-looking, the other all of black girls, many looking like linemen (linewomen?), including the QB. I can not follow the score well, I must have missed something, but I hear that the black team won 19-14. A semi-final of the men's tournament follows: it's between "Texans" and "Patriots" and ends 13-12, for the former, if I remember well.

After lunch and the photo with the trophy, there is still some time to follow Madden '18 tournament. The screens are not seen very well from the stands: I can only follow the game shown on the biggest screen, and it's a bit difficult. The game is between Patriots and Jets: the Jets representative hurries, screams and provokes, the Patriots one stays calm. I leave them with the Patriots clearly in the lead.


The program included an evening party at the "Disney Springs" resort. We are greeted by 6 cheerleaders from 6 different teams. There are also 5 mascots, who perform in a dance competition: the Texans "Toro" wins, despite the threats to the jury of the Buccaneers mascot, the pirate Captain Fear. There are three former Pro Bowlers, not big names: RB Dunn (Tampa Bay, Atlanta),  Jacksonville QB Brunell, DE Rucker (Carolina). The latter tells how it was a great consolation to play the Pro Bowl after losing the Super Bowl. He does not look like a NFL DE (he's the tallest one in the last picture): in fact, he says he lost 50 pounds after the end of his caree

And tomorrow, finally, is game day

NFL Pro Bowl - 2° giorno: allenamenti e party

Stavolta il pullman per il centro ESPN è pieno. Anche lì c'è molta più folla di ieri: si fa un po' fatica a trovare posto in tribuna. Si vedono molte maglie di Pittsburgh, ma anche del WR di Miami Landry. Ci sono poi le maglie storiche: il sempreverde Montana, ma anche Jim Kelly e Lawrence Taylor.

Stavolta seguo l'AFC. Prima di cominciare, arriva Von Miller e lancia alcuni palloni tra il pubblico. Si parte: prima attacco e difesa provano gli schemi separatamente (stavolta l'attacco usa un solo pallone per volta), poi si uniscono. Il safety Weddle gioca affiancato dal figlio, che prova anche a partecipare ad un placcaggio. L'allenamento dura solo una ventina di minuti, poi parte l'assalto dei fans, ma almeno dal mio lato si vedono pochi giocatori, e tutti della difesa. Vedo molto da vicino il LB di Cleveland Schobert, che non sembra nemmeno avere un'età da pro. Passa anche un giocatore della NFC, il LB Chandler Jones.

Si sgombera tutto per far posto al flag football: vi sono infatti le finali di un torneo nazionale organizzato dall'NFL. Si gioca prima una partita "di esibizione" femminile, tra due squadre che non potrebbero essere più diverse: una di ragazze in prevalenza bianche e dall'aria atletica, l'altra tutta di nere, molte con fisici da uomini (donne?) di linea, a cominciare dalla QB. Non riesco a seguire bene il punteggio, devo essermi perso qualcosa, ma sento dire che hanno vinto le nere 19-14. Segue la semifinale del torneo maschile, tra "Texans" e "Patriots": finisce 13-12, mi sembra per i primi.

Dopo il pranzo e la foto col trofeo, rimane tempo per seguire un po' il torneo di Madden '18. Gli schermi non si vedono molto bene dagli spalti: riesco a seguire solo la partita inquadrata nello schermo più grande, e un po' a fatica. La partita è tra Patriots e Jets: il rappresentante dei Jets si agita, urla e provoca, quello dei Patriots rimane impassibile. Li lascio coi Patriots nettamente in testa.

Il programma prevedeva un party serale, presso il complesso "Disney Springs". Veniamo accolti da 6 cheerleaders di 6 squadre diverse. Sono presenti anche 5 mascotte, che si esibiscono in una gara di ballo: vince il Toro dei Texans, nonostante le minacce alla giuria della mascotte dei Buccaneers, il pirata Captain Fear. Sono presenti tre ex Pro Bowlers, non grandi nomi: il RB Dunn (ampa Bay, Atlanta), un QB di Jacksonville, il DE Peppers (Carolina). Quest'ultimo racconta di come sia stata una bella consolazione giocare il Pro Bowl dopo aver perso il Super Bowl. Non sembra avere un fisico da DE dell'NFL (è quello più alto dell'ultima foto), e infatti racconta di aver perso 50 libbre dopo la fine della carriera.

E domani, finalmente, si gioca...
