My idea was to arrive for the finish of the women's race walk, but I can't: I get in around 10.15, when only the last ones have yet to afinish. In the covered grandstand it rains from the roof and some seats are wet and unusable, but there is a wide choice. They immediately have the victory ceremony for the race walk, and I discover that Mihai has won with an outstanding time: 45'53 ", world lead (I will also discover that among the boys she would have finished 6th out of 15 finishers). A potential gold medal: shame that our medieval citizenship laws prevent her from participating, not considering her as Italian.. The first group of women's hammer yhrow, the weaker one, is underway. The first marker is at 50 meters, the best will make 40. Seeing athletes at this leve,l one gets an idea of how difficult it is: some give the idea of being dragged by the tool (of throws, I only tried the shot put in middle school, if I threw the hammer I would be terrified of hitting my head). Then you see Mori and think "what's the problem?". Then we start with the multiple event: three heats of decathlonìs 100, two of heptathlon's 100hs, all with headwinds, especially the last of the boys. Among the girls I can see the victory of my follower Matilde Carboncini.
After these race, I move to the opposite grandstand, both to better follow the decathlon's long jump and to escape the rain from the ceiling. From there you can also see better the hammer throw's platform. Sure, on the other sided there are the 100's heats, but I think I can follow them quite well. LJ starts a bit late, the runway of the best is the one furthest from the grandstand: the landing is covered by the metric bar, but you still get an idea of the mrasure. Demo starts with 6.88 and exults, Nonino replies immediately (and he almost always becomes Nonnino for the speakers, and also the South Tyroleans are pronounced the English way) with 7.21, then Carugati steps in with 7.07: the three-man duel goes on and will continue throughout the day. In the hammer throw, you immediately see that Mori is of another category: she starts with 62 meters and will reach 65.
Meanwhile, there are the heats of 100, very influenced by the wind: there are in fact strong gusts of cross wind, which most of the time will count as headwind, but not always. Also against the wind, even if slightly, Nnachi, another victim of the aforementioned medieval laws, makes 11.74. Among the boys, in the first heat they are all above 11", in the last the wind becomes in favour and one makes 10.45. I can see the race quite well, also from my side, but I canot see the time: there is only one display, at the finish and towards the main grandstand. A similar issue applies to the heptathlon's high jump, where you can't see the scoreboard: for this reason, after LJ, I go back to the main grandstand (where shortly afterwards it will stop oraining). There I meet a staff member of the national team, who says she landed at 8, returning from Jerusalem, and came immediately here. The morning ends withthe decathlon's shot put: in both sectors there is only one marker, at 14 meters, but nobody reaches it. The morning races finish at 1.15pm. The food stand before of the stadium does not convince me, I go to eat in a shopping center nearby, considering that I will miss the first race of the afternoon, the weaker group of men's hammer throw. When I come back it's in the second round, and I follow him very little. At 3 pm the heptathlon's SP and the decathlon's HJ begin: I move to the start area to follow the former, as the latter lasts much longer. What I said about HT applies: Carpinello, the only one above 11 meters, is the only one to look like a thrower. Carboncini makes two fouls, then at the third she throws from a standstill and makes 8 meters. In the meantime there are the 400hs batteries, first girls', then boys': above all Cavo and Seramondi are impressive. In the best group of high jump there is a pause before the only third attempt at 1.86: they discuss for a long time and no one explains tus what happens, the speaker talks about everything except this. Eventually the athlete who was expected to jump is considered retired. We end up with 4 to 1.92.
At 4.45 pm HJ and HT are over and since then there are no more field events, it seems to be at the World Relays ... I had noticed this somewhat strange program, with few field events. After the heats of the 800, where Pernici and Canazza impress, I go for a walk ... and I miss the semi-finals of the women's 100: I just catch a glimpse of the last one. Not only did I remember the time wrong, but they also started early (otherwise I would have missed only the first one). Meanwhile, the main grandstand has filled up, while the opposite one remains almost empty. However, if I am not the only ordinary spectator, that is, neither an insider, nor a relative or friend of athletes, we are close. There is a strong cross wind, which seems to disturb the semifinals of the men's 100 more than the measurement suggests.
The wind is really cold, so I decide to move to the other side to stay in the sun (I will pay this decision with sunburn on my face and arms). I move after the first heat of the decathlon's 400 where an athlete clearly in the lead stumbles, gets up, falls again and manages to finish second. Then he is rescued, thorn by cramps. From there I see first the other 400 heats, then the 3000st, first girls', then boys': the only problem is not seeing the time. The 3000st have in common to haveof a clear favorite: in the men's race he takes about thirty meters in the first two laps and then controls, in the women's one she takes off with three laps to go.
I go back to the main grandstand for the 100 finals. I remember that there is also the lower part, the one below the arrival of the external stairs. I find a seat there, and it's a great location. I will not follow the women's competition very well, but for my fault: I break my base rule "you either live or you film" and I miss the first half to take pictures. Nnachi wins the women's race and celebrates with the flag, as if it were an international race, posing with the third classified. In the men's race, despite the usual headwind, Faggin makes 10.44
I go, without waiting for the victory ceremonies. For someone here, the next stop could be Eugene, for many more, Calì. For me, more modestly, Munich (if we talk about athletics).
