Football Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi (2010)

Clicca qui per la versione italiana The Football Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi has just ended. The European champion team, despite not being in a great moment, won, beating an outsider in the final. Just like in 2010, the edition I attended.

That year I would have liked to go to Madrid for the Champions League final, also considering that the last time Inter had participated I was not born yet (I had seen instead the home matches of the 1991 and 1994Uefa Cup finals, at that time they were played on two legs), but I had not found tickets: not easy from Rome. Having won, there was also the chance to go to the Club World Cup, in a venue, Abu Dhabi, a little more accessible than Japan. For work reasons I could only go for the final, and I had terror terror not to find Inter: I decided to go anyway because just before, and with the same ticket, there was
the third place final, so I would see Inter anyway. I foundit in the championship final.

I arrived in Abu Dhabi on Friday morning (the match was on Saturday). In the hotel I found many Inter fans: so I had the opportunity to feel the mood again among the fans, with the debate on bigger or smaller faults of the coach, as in all the years in which we don't dominate. I missed these things, in the last months in Frankfurt (I had moved there) and also in the Rome years.

I left for the stadium in a taxi, together with another fan, just before the start of the third place match, while others stayed in the hotel, planning to move only for the Inter match. I also was not so interested in the "small final", but since it was part of the ticket I had paid for, I wanted to watch it. I'm always amazed to see how many people give up a show for which they have paid, I noticed it also for motorcycling.

I entered the stadium that the thirf place final, between Internacional Porto Alegre and a Korean team, had begun since about ten minutes. The stadium had many empty seats: it will start to get filled only towards the end, and never completely. Internacional wins, without anyone caring so much: everyone, including myself, were ony waiting until it ended and give way to the championship final.

In thebreak between the two matches I visit the FIFA exhibition around the stadium: on a wall they play a match of vertical football, with players and ball tied to rubber bands. I think of the terror I would have had there. I get back to the stands, which is now almost full: you can see many black and blue colours, even among locals. I'm behind a goal, if I'm not mistaken where Inter will attack in the second half.

The final begins: Inter against a Congolese team. Situation on one hand enviable, but on the other unxonfortable: if we win it's obvious, if we lose it is a humiliation that we will remember for the rest of our lives. This is what I think until we score our first goal, but
then the match has no history: we win 3-0, and Biabiany also scores. At the end, on one hand, I think "World champions, finally, after 45 years!", but on the other "Fancy that we did not win".

At the exit, a big crowd for taxis, the only way to get back to the hotel. At a certain point I start to worry, because I cannot find one and I do not know where to wait, since they always stop at different spots. After a time that seemed very long, but it was not so much (half an hour? more?) I find it.

The day after I heard of the polemics that had led to manager Benitez's dismissal: another scene we were used to before the golden years and would become usual again later. Risultati immagini per mondiale per club 2010Source: Eurosport
