Live athletics, at last! I get to the stadium at 10.10. The meeting starts at 11, but I find the stadium full of students, from the 4th district of Florence, I discover. There are mixed sprints, on 80 meters, for non-agonists: it's much if they make it in less than 12 seconds.
The students will remain for the first three races (between men and women): the covered part of the main stands is almost full, even with someone on the aisles (especially teachers). We start with the 100 of the decathlon: of the announced participants, 4 are missing and 3 are Italian, including who was supposed to be n. 1, Zanatta (Cairoli was not in the list). In aheat there is a problem with the starter: the counter-starter is not heard and two athletes continue at least up to 60 meters. There will be an opposite problem in the women's 200: the starter has an echo and it always seems to hear a second shot, but perhaps the effect is heard only from the stands, the athletes seem not to suffer.
The 100 end up at 11.30 am. It seems difficult to keep the schedule, which sets the eptathlon 100hs at 11.45, since to place the hurdles they are not equipped like in the World Championships: they are 3 people overall, and yet they succeed, more or less. We start with hurdles and Bougard already shows she is of another category. Good race for Ferrero. It will be men's LJ, instead, to start late, especially the stronger group, apparently because of problems with the anemometer. The students had applauded everyone already from the warm-up and they huddled to greet anyone who passed under the stands, but during the race they incited everyone as if he were Manyonga. The LJ can be seen very well from my position: after a round you can also predict the measures well enough, even without the metric bar.
Around 12:30 students leave and the stadium becomes a desert: we will remain fewer than 100, of which very few common spectators: they are almost all linked to athletes. At the beginning of women's HJ, I move to its sector, even if LJ is not over yet, because I'm afraid I will not understand anything about the race, since the scoreboards were always turned towards the bend. The advantage of a desert stadium is that one can carefully choose the best place, to watch closely, but without a view obstructed by the gazebos that shelter the athletes from the sun. And you know, it is always worth looking at the eptatletes closely: this time Trigueiro de Assis of Brazil was particularly worth. Another race dominated by Bougard, with almost all Italians improving, especially Ferrero and Palumbo. The men's SP is also held during HJ, but I do not want to leave my position and therefore I do not see it at all, especially the better group, which takes place in the opposite corner.
After each race, a "virtual ranking" is updated, which assumes that all, in the remaining races, repeat the performances of their PBs (of the multiple event, not of the single event). Among men the favorite, the American Taiwo is never at the top of the actual standing, but keeps the lead of the virtual one for the first 3 events, then gives way to the actual leader, Roe of Norway. Among women Bougard always dominates, but the simulation shows that the ranking of Ferrero is destined to decline: at the end of the day she is 12th effective and 15th virtual.
There is a break of just under an hour: just enough time to eat something. You see some athlete at the bar, including the above mentioned Brazilian. I don't go so far from the stadium, I just go to the ice cream shop opposite. It resumes with men's HJ, women's SP and the extra women's javelin race. This time I stay on the main stand, to follow them all, and I have problems with HJ, as often the scoreboards remain turned towards the bends and the speaker has to call several times, to let us see themtoo. In the weight I follow the worse group, with all the Italians, who are struggling to get to 10 meters. Beautiful 3-girls' fight Visca-Bani-Bacciotti in the javelin: in the last throw the first one closes it with the Italian U20 record, measured first electronically at 56.75, then manually at 56.79. After it I move to the HJ sector: Taiwo wins, but less clearly than expected.
In the late afternoon, the stands are repopulated by local athletes, also in sight of the regional side races. In the 200 of the heptathlon, Bougard still dominates, giving an impression of great ease. Montagna was in the lead after 3 heats and closes 6th. In the 400 Taiwo sinks agains, but even more defending champion Dos Santos
Local races are left. A men's PV race, disputed in general disinterest, ends. It was impossible to follow it, since the scoreboards were always turned towards the athletes: only once I could see that the height was 3.30. There are some series of 100 women: best result 12.17, however PB for its author. On exiting, I that in men's 100 Mach di Palmenstein made 10.66. Going towards the station I meet some athletes waiting for a ride
I have to go: I will not be there on the second day. Next stop: Golden Gala
