European Athletics Championships in Berlin: Day 4 (10-08-2018)

I arrive around 11. This time I decided to take it easy and skip the first group of women's hammer (of which I'll see the last throw). I also saw the pole vault qualifications (anticipated at the last moment) and the heptatlon's LJ started for a while. It is the day when I meet most Italians: I start with Rondelli on the underground, then at the entrance a group of Pavullo nel Frignano, fans of Bertoni, and others are seen in my sector and surroundings. After the race I will meet Bertoni herself. The most numerous, Germans apart, always seem Swiss and French. then there are the British, the Norwegians (especially in the evening) and the presence of Finns remains constant: moving, given the results of their athletes (so far they have not gone beyond a sixth place).

I struggle a bit to find my seat, difficult to reach because the nearest gate is a VIP entrance and then you have to go around it. I see the hammer well and the start of the 200, in LJ I see the run and I can get some idea of the measure, but it is always worth looking at the eptatletes from behind. Instead I have a problem with pole vault: I do not see the group B scoreboard, at most I see a couple of letters of the athlete.

Before I can figure out what's going on, Thiam and Johnson-Thomson will shoot 6.45 and 6.44, then KJT will get better. I see Stecchi clear safely 5.36, then 5.51. At this height they remain in 16, so I think it is done, but at some point I'm afraid I spoke too early: in the end, however, only 10 clear 5.61 and then Stecchi, although not among them, remains in the 12. On track we have first 200, where the Italians do not shine, but pass, then the 3000sc, where two Italians will do their PBs: one by 16 seconds. It's already the second race with two Italians doing their personal best: I do not remember other cases of this kind at these levels. The track events end with the 4X400 relay, with Italy passing without problems, the girls even with the best time.

The heptatlon girls give way to triple jumpers: after the first two disastrous performances of Italians I go to get a drink. It takes me a while to return to my seat, for the problems mentioned, and I miss the third round of jumps: I find that the Italians had improved and that Forte will be the umpteenth first excluded from the final.

After the relays, only the heptatlon javelin remains: I walk away after seeing the first two once.

In the evening I arrive a little late: I rush in to see at least the second semi-final of 110hs. It's less hot, in fact it's almost cool, and you notice the shorter queues at the drinks' kiosks. From my seat you can see the high jump very well: I had chosen the place on purpose. I can see well also the beginning of the final straight, but, seeing the arrivals from behind, you do not understand much of the positions. The lower deck is almost full, except for a bit in the bends, the upper one less: they announce 48,000 tickets sold.

I certainly do not regret choosing this place. Although Trost remains on its current levels, not high, and comess eighth, the high jump is very exciting. The progression is slower than usual: after 4 heights (1.94) they remain in 5. In 3 they clear 1.96, Jungfleisch very widely, one fails and one, Demireva, passes. Demireva also passes 1.98, cleared only by Lasitskene, so that I think she has problems and I wonder if she will return in the race: instead  she is back at 2.00 falls clears exceeds them on third attempt. she will come second because Lasitskene had cleard them on the second.

The other competitions are not very interesting: in the javelin Hussong shoots 67 meters on her first when the Others struggle at 61 and then we understand that the race for the first place is already over, in triple jump after the first 2 rounds we have only marginal changes. On track for us the highlight was the 400hs women with Pedroso who starts badly, then in the final straight recovers and seems to be fighting for the medals, but at the end gives is and closes fifth. Too bad: one got a medal with 55.31. It's the day of regrets: there are 3 races in which one got a medal with accessible results for Italians: there are also women's HJ and men's 400.

We close with 1500 of the Ingebritsen brothers. Already it is not easy to distinguish athletes of the same nationality in a middle distance race: let alone if they are brothers too. The three start behind, then go up all together and at the end wins little Jakob (not yet 18!) wins.

Unlike yesterday I could not resist without a break tonight: I have to study carefully the program to choose the right time and I find before the semi-finals of the 200, taking into account losing the first, the one without Italians. In a surprise I find no queue and I have time to look out to see the first semifinal. The program is tight, so much so that it will close a little late, and I think I miss the medal ceremonies, which take place in the square and always the day after (for track and field events). And to say that in 1936 it was done on the contrary: the awards of other sports took place at the Olympic stadium

European Athletics Championships in Berin: Day 3 (09-08-2018)

This time in the morning there are crowds at the exit of the metro, but less at the gates, and in fact there is a little less public than yesterday. You see French, Estonians (being a day of multiple trials), but above all Swiss. Among the Germans, especially the hephatlete Schaefer's fans stand out. This time I really sit down in my assigned seat, also because the volunteer controls me closely: however, it is higher than the other days and above all in the shade. I'm in a good position especially for the  the heptatlon's high jump, but I also see the discus well.

I arrive a little late and miss the first round of the discus qualifications, but I have time to see the beautiful second throw of Osakue, ideally in the eyes of those who attacked her. Later, in the second group, Perkovic's discus flies low, seems to have started badly, but lands at 64 meters.

Then there is the women's long jump, where  Strati at the second jump makes 6.60. I think she has done it, but instead she will be out for 1cm, in a ranking where from 6.65 to 6.60 there will be an athlete for each centimeter. Then the 110hs heats are made, to eliminate 4 athletes in total, but the Italians do not spare themselves: Dal Molin and Fofana shoot 13.40 and 13.50. How many times, in a great event, two Italians have made their PBs in the same race (at least in track and field events)?  Our athletes seem suddenly reborn: even Barontini in 800 will defend himself well, but it will be not enough. Only Aniballi in discus could have done something better. In a false start of 110hs on the board appears the red Ampelmann (the East's man of the traffic light, one of the symbols of Berlin).

T
he heptatlon's high jump starts, and I would move closer to look at the athletes from closer: the eptatlete always deserve a close look, but I dare not go to the sunny side, even if it is less hot than the other days. I do not even notice that the javelin has also started until Hussong shoots 67 meters. Finished, sooner than expectd the high jump, I'm leaving, like almost everyone: I do not wait for the second group of the javelin, scheduled for an hour later. Before leaving, however, I peek at the Marathon gate and I see that those left are not so few.

Before the evening session, I go for a swim in the Olympic pool. Today it is a normal public swimming pool (in 2009 I thought it was not, but in reality I had not found the entrance). It is the second Olympic swimming pool I visit, after the one in London. If then the excitement was to swim where Phelps and the other big had swum, this time it was to take a bath in a place so full of history. I can not name a swimmer of 1936, although I know the Japanese were going well then. Then the crowding does not allow swimming: there would be two lanes reserved for swimming, but too crowded to be serious (not that I had the intention). I also try the dives, but only from a meter (the trampoline from 3 was open).

At the exit I read a weather alert and the risk of postponement of some races, but there is still the sun and just a bit of wind.  I enter the stadium a few minutes after the beginning of the races: this time I am in the lower deck at the end of the first bend. I'm in a good position for pole vault and I can clearly see the finish line, but the perspective does not allow me to evaluate the order of arrival: in 100hs Bogliolo seems third or fourth, then theoretically still with final chances . Instead, she is fifth: good anyway. In front of me there is a group of Norwegians who have come to celebrate Warholm: they will not be disappointed.

The most interesting competition for us, the qualifications of the men's high jump, takes place on the opposite side. I find it hard to follow it even with binoculars: I can not understand if the bar is cleared by little of by much. Busy with HJ, I do not follow the women' PV much, but HJ ends in time (with Fassinotti first of the excluded, pity) to make me focus on the epilogue of pole vault, very exciting, with 4 athletes still in the race at4 80 and the Greek double, with Stefanidi that will be hugged by Berlino wrapped in the Greek flag. There is also the javelin, but it is a subdued race: no change of position in the last 3 throws and one gets a medal with less than 86 meters. The Germans dreamed of a sweep but they got at least a double.

On the track, we first have the disappointment of Grenot: she starts fasts, arrives at the final straight still in the lead, but then gives in: she is also the first out of the final. Then there is Desalu, who enters the straight line aligned with the first and remains there, apart from . For the aforementioned problems of perspective, I think he came fourth, if not third, instead he is sixth, but after seeing the time of Guliyev you understand that even his will be exceptional and it is: 20.13

Above all, however, there are 3000sc. I start thinking that a placement in the top 8 would be good, but after a first tactical kilometer Chiappnelli takes the initiative. One wonders if he will hold, and he does: it is only surpassed by the two favorites and is bronze. A completely unexpected medal: once we won one like this at every event, now much less.

After the program ended with the amazing final of 100hs, they invite to stay in the stadium for bad weather, but few follow the advice. I too decided to venture out, and I find it does not rain or almost: the rain will be strong only a little before entering the subway.

European Athleitcs Championships in Berlin: Day 2 (08-08-2018)

I get to the stadium at 9.30. This time there is a bit of the queues at the gate, which suggests that there is a little more people than yesterday, and so it is: we could define a normal attendance for a morning session, if we had not accustomed badly the year last in London. My place is more or less the same as yesterday, so in the sun. The heat is even worse than yesterday: I'm in a good position for the decathlon pole vault, but I think it will not be easy to survive until then. At the first pause to drink, I notice that in my sector there are some places in the shade and I sit there for the rest of the morning.

Also today I arrive on time for Cairoli's heat: he is still improving and rises to fourth place in the standings, not far from the podium. The speaker presents him as a possible contender for the medals, but then specifies that he is not good in discus, and in fact there he will fall to 12th place. He will then limit damage in pole vault, where he will still improve by coming ahead of tied with many top rated athletes, including the future gold medalist Abele. The Germans are very enthusiastic about their decathletes (this time it is not the case to say "they heat up").

After his heat, Howe is interviewed by the speaker (in English) and talks about Donato's coffee machine. Then they play "Azzurro". The race that I see worst is the qualification of women's triple jump, and maybe it's better, because after having laughed so much of the French yesterday, today it's our turn to do 6 fouls in 2.This time I voluntarily leave a little 'before the end of the decathlon' s PV, after having been forced to leave in London last year.

I arrive for the evening session shortly after 6 pm, in time to see Cairoli's third throw: he is which is still improving. There are a few more people than yesterday, but concentrated on the opposite side to the final straight (like me): the first deck is almost all full, the second partly. In contrast, the area between the VIP tribune (in the middle of the final straight) and the Marathon gate is almost empty. The attendance is concentrated in the sector of the discus throw, where the farewell of the local idol (and mine) Harting goes on stage. It starts with the women's high jump, opened by Rossit and Vallortigara. For about half an hour the scene will be all for them: already at 1.86 they remain at 17, so we understand that having arrived there without fouls could be enough to qualify. And it is the case of Trost, always safe on low heights, but not of Vallortigara, while Rossit is already out. We think that Vallortigara's miss is an episode, instead at 1.90 she misses 3 times, while Trost in the third clears it well. The track races start with the women's 400 hurdles.

The installation of hurdles is a challenge: the machine that carries them never stops and the volunteers must pick them up, place them and then run after it to repeat the operation.

I'm going to get me some food before the semi-finals of the 200, but I underestimate the queue and I lose the first one. I arrive just in time for the second, where it seems to me to see Desalu come second, but the board shows Gemili second, and yet they have very different colours of both jerseys and skins. The board then stops, and I find out that it was wrong.

Unlike yesterday, the evening gets animated in the second part. There is the final of the 10,000 women, which at one point looks like a walking race: one no longer understands who is in front, who is behind and who is lapped. but above all there are 3 competitions all full of twists. In the discus only one of the first 8 does not improve in the final 3 throws, Harting at one point is third, but closes sixth and in the last round there are 3 changes of position, including the taking of first place by Gudzius. Even in the long jump many upheavals, with the German conquering the silver at the last jump.

The women shot put is the race where less happens, until the penultimate throw. The speaker recalls that Guga is the last obstacle to the German's gold, but the attendance cheers gfor her and continues to applaud her after taking the lead.

At the end of the discus they project a celebratory video of Harting and the whole attendance applauds standing. The decathlon is left, where Germany celebrates another gold and Italy a great race of Cairoli.

In short, it is one of those days when you look at the Italians and you wonder "but why do not I go watch fencing?", But then you look at the rest and think it's worth it. It was one of the best athletic evenings I remember
